National League (Grade 6)
SJBB Forms New Transition 50/70 “National League”
SJBB is thrilled to announce the formation of the new spring recreation “National League,” starting in 2010. Our new league, primarily focused on our 6th grade players, will provide a confidence building transition year before moving to the “Big Field” in the Suburban League in 7th grade. Unlike past seasons, where the 6th graders played, in the Majors, on the 46/60 fields, our new National League will play on 50/70 transition fields.
Long Field (behind the SummitCommunity Center on Morris Avenue), will be our primary transition field. In addition to a slightly greater pitching distance and longer base paths, the new National League will also offer a more advanced set of playing rules (e.g., base runners are permitted to “lead” before a pitch is delivered). We intend to offer coaches and players additional training and clinic opportunities so that all participants are comfortable with these rules before the season begins.
The National League will be the spring recreation league for all 6th graders. However, the SJBB Executive Board will consider limited requests from the parents of 7th grade players who feel strongly that their child may not yet be ready for the “Big Field” of the Suburban League. [Parents of 7th graders who would like the Executive Board to consider such a request should indicate this on their child’s registration form.]
The National League will continue the tradition of intra-community play, with all of the in-conference games held on Summit fields between Summit teams. The National League may also offer each team the opportunity to play a few out of town games. This would provide all of our National League spring recreation players with an opportunity to experience the excitement of travel baseball as part of the spring recreation season.
Cost of this program is $170. Uniform is provided.
