Summit Junior Baseball and Girls Softball Mission Statement:
To offer the best possible baseball and softball experience to Summit’s boys and girls from grades kindergarten through ninth grade by providing an environment that inspires learning, teamwork, skill development, sportsmanship and fun.
SJBB General Overview
SJBB is a not-for-profit, all-volunteer organization established in 1971. Since its inception, SJBB, through its thousands of volunteers, has dedicated itself to delivering quality baseball and girl’s softball programs to Summit’s youth.
Each year SJBB fields over 100 baseball and girls softball teams for approximately 1,500 Summit children for the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons.
Baseball
SJBB offers T-ball to Kindergarten aged boys and girls and a more advanced Rookie League, "coach-pitch” program for 1st and 2nd graders. When girls reach 1st grade they are provided with the choice of moving to the Summit Girls Softball League or remaining with the baseball program. This choice is open throughout the remainder of their participation in SJBB.
The baseball program transitions from more of a learning environment to one where runs are counted and team standings kept as players reach the Minor League (grades 3 and 4), Major League (grade 5 ), National League (grade 6) and the Suburban League (grades 7 through 9.)
The philosophy behind SJBB’s spring program (for grades 3 - 9) is to attempt to establish parity among teams by grade in the draft selection process. Teams are formed around a player draft that relies on an independent skill evaluation of each player. While anyone registering for the program will be assigned to a team, teams are selected based on matching as closely as possible the skill sets of players to promote even competition among the teams. Summit Middle School boys in grades 7th and 8th are eligible to try out for SJBB's Spring Travel travel team. Players tryout and a 15 man team will be taken from the Suburban League to play competatively against other middle school teams within our area. While it is a Summit Jr. Baseball run team, it is designed to be a "feeder" program to the high school basebball program.
The approach to team selection changes for SJBB’s summer travel program. Each year over 200 players participate in the competitive summer leagues. The Summer League program starts in mid-June and continues until the end of July. Player commitment and team selection is markedly different. Teams are chosen on a competitive basis and players are expected to fully commit to the summer program.
SJBB also field’s summer American Legion teams for players of high school age. As of the Fall of 2008 we have fielded teams for Fall Ball as well.
Girls Softball
The girls softball program has been growing each year. Summit’s teams have partnered with neighboring Springfield in a girls softball program where games are played in both Summit and Springfield. The team selection philosophy is similar to the baseball program, in that teams are selected with as much parity as possible in an effort to keep the program exciting and enjoyable for the girls.
General League Philosophy
SJBB’s philosophy is unique. It strives to give back to the community in everything it does. The League raises through registration fees, fundraisers and sponsorships all the funds necessary to run its programs. These funds are used to purchase player uniforms, provide equipment and maintain the fields that it uses.
Each year the League donates $30,000 or more toward keeping the fields it uses in shape. This is in addition to the numerous hours its coaches and other volunteers put into maintaining fields before and after games, other in-kind services and the field user fees it collects on behalf of and passes directly back to the City.
Financial Aid
SJBB offers financial assistance for those who qualify. If you are in need of financial aid, please utilize the "Feedback" tab on the Homepage and request assistance.
